In the human body, lactic acid is produced by lactic acid bacteria, known as lactobacilli. They create an acidic environment, the perfect breeding ground for physiological microflora. The body's own lactobacilli are found primarily in the intestines and vagina.
Lactic acid occurs naturally in two forms. These differ in their structural properties. The names "dextrorotatory" and "levorotatory" derive from the reaction of polarized light. When this light hits a lactic acid molecule, it is rotated to the left or right, depending on its chemical structure.
It is noteworthy that the body's own lactic acid belongs exclusively to the dextrorotatory category.
