Astaxanthin is a well-known and well-researched antioxidant. The substance belongs to the carotenoid group, is of plant origin, and is originally produced by the blood-rain algae Haematococcus pluvialis. Curiously, the substance is even responsible for the red coloration of flamingos. These birds eat crabs, which in turn consume astaxanthin-containing algae and, over time, thus acquire the substance's characteristic color.
